  • The lineup averages 30 caps and 17 in official competition.
  • Gregg Berhalter makes two changes to the lineup that faced England, inserting defender Cameron Carter-Vickers for Walker Zimmerman and forward Josh Sargent for Haji Wright. With Carter-Vickers’ inclusion, the team’s total number of World Cup debuts at Qatar 2022 moves to 18 – a team record for one World Cup.
  • Nine other players make their third consecutive start, while Sargent returns to the lineup after starting the tournament opener against Wales.
  • Turning 20 today, midfielder Yunus Musah becomes the first USMNT player to appear in a World Cup match on their birthday. Twenty-seven different USMNT players have appeared in a match on their birthday, covering 28 different instances – Eric Wynalda twice played on his birthday.
  • Having debuted for the USA at age 17 in November 2020, Musah set team records with 20 starts and 1,578 minutes played as a teenager and equaled the record of 21 caps that Jozy Altidore and Christian Pulisic achieved in their teenage years.
  • Tyler Adams captains the USMNT for the 12th time tonight. The team is 4-1-6 when he wears the armband.
  • For the first time in USMNT World Cup history, all 11 starters currently feature for European clubs. Club distribution: England (6), Italy (2), France (1), Scotland (1) Spain (1)
  • Only three starters had been born when the USA faced Iran in the 1998 FIFA World Cup: Tim Ream (11 years old), Matt Turner (4 years old) and Antonee Robinson (10 months old). Overall, 11 players on the 26-man roster had not yet been born for the ’98 World Cup matchup.
  • CAUTION WATCH: Starters Sergiño Dest, Weston McKennie and Tim Ream, as well as substitute Kellyn Acosta all carry yellow cards into the match. No Iran players sit on yellow cards ahead of tonight’s game.
  • The USMNT will dress 26 players for today’s game. Five substitutions are allowed in three different moments. Halftime does not count as a substitution moment.
  • The USMNT is 0-1-1 all-time against Iran. The USA lost 2-1 in their first meeting with Iran at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in Lyon, France. Current USMNT general manager Brian McBride scored in the match. The teams met again in a friendly two years later, with the USA using a Chris Armas goal to earn a 1-1 draw on Jan. 16, 2000 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
  • Gregg Berhalter is 36-10-12 in 58 matches as USMNT head coach.
  • Antonio Mateu of Spain is the referee for tonight’s match. This is his second match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, having officiated the opening game between Qatar and Ecuador. This is also the first USMNT match he has officiated.
